Cohabitate
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure
You can mitigate negative interactions with wildlife using the following strategies and tools.
Smart strategies
Remove vegetation around the perimeter of house (Zone 1) and keep shruby material to minimum in a ~30’ buffer around the home (Zone 2) to reduce forage for deer, cover for small mammals and carnivores
Secure trash and compost
Avoid keeping attractants like bird feeders and fruit trees around the house
Don’t let pets wander too far and keep indoors at night
If you have chickens, be sure to put them away in a coop at night and keep in a fenced enclosure
If you’ve seen recent cougar sign, make sure to be extra cautious with kids
Helpful tools
Motion sensor lights around high use areas (garage, front door, porch)
Electric fencing is great at protecting small areas – compost piles, orchards, chicken coops
Adding strips of flagging to small areas you want to protect can help deter coyotes
